Edward Hopper’s “Nighthawks” Poster - 1981 Framed Lithograph
Museum Exhibition Poster, 26.75” x 38.25”
Continuous Tone Lithographic Print (No Dots)
This original 1981 lithographic poster was published by the Art Institute of Chicago and printed by Black Box Collotype, the last remaining press in the United States still using this high-quality printing technique. Unlike mass-produced reproductions, this is the authentic poster produced for the museum’s exhibition of Edward Hopper’s iconic “Nighthawks.”
Framed and ready to display, this piece is a true collector’s item for any art enthusiast!
Here’s a more concise and rephrased version:
Continuous Tone Printing Process:
Continuous tone lithography is a screenless printing method that eliminates halftone dots, achieving remarkable color fidelity, detail, and clarity. This process, often used by museums and fine artists for high-quality reproductions, produces images with rich tones and sharp lines. It evolved from collotype printing, with Black Box Collotype being one of the last printers in the world to master it before closing in 2004.
Due to its labor-intensive nature, collotype was a time-consuming and expensive process, requiring up to 27 colors to be laid down individually, a task that could take months. While offset lithography became more economical, continuous tone printing remained a prestigious, high-end method, revered for its ability to capture the finest details and colors without the risk of moiré patterns.
