This elegant Art Deco Vase was designed by Eva Zeisel in the Gobelin 4 pattern for SMF Wheelock Black Forest Pottery during the late 1920’s. In those years Zeisel produced signature hand painted works for Schramburg ceramics. These hard-to-find pieces exemplify the Beauhaus Era, with its emphasis on angularity, and also suggest Zeisel’s influence on Art Deco designs, German Modernist Pottery and, later, ceramic designs and production in the US. She is considered by some to have been the most important ceramic designer of the 20th century.
PATTERN: The ”Gobelin 4” design, with its diagonally placed slices of bold colors following one another in an under and over pattern, suggests weaving. In fact, Gobelin means “tapestry weave” in English.
DIMENSIONS: The Vase measures 7.5” high. The circumference at the widest point is 16”; the diameter for the top rim is 3.25” and the diameter of the base is 3.5”.
MARKS: The primary mark on the base is a circle with the SMF logo stamped at the top, below which the following words are stamped: Wheelock BLACK FOREST HANDPAINTED POTTERY. Below the circle is another stamp: Gobelin 4, near to which, in a larger font, is the number 57. Off to the right the numbers 2627 are incised. See Images.

Overall the colors are strong, the handles and the design are fully intact and the piece is smooth to the touch and has a sheen. Under a light, on a shelf, it glows. There are two small imperfections that we can discern: a small piece of glaze is missing at and just below the top rim and another piece at the lower rim. The very bottom of the base has evidence of wear, including two small indentations where the base finish has been worn off. less
