This stunning large hand-painted vibrant green pot with detailed incised irises features even a beautiful drip interior.
Antique Awaji pottery is a type of Japanese pottery made on Awaji Island between 1830 and 1939. The ware is sometimes mistaken for European majolica or American art pottery. Unlike majolica and the vast majority of Western art pottery, most Awaji pottery is hand-thrown, with only small and complex forms molded. The Awaji potters were masters of their craft who had an innate feel for the possibilities of the clay form. The result of their efforts is a pottery of exceptional form that has an informal and organic feel. This piece likely dates to pre 1890 since it is unmarked.
