Offered is a large hand-painted and burnished glaze vintage 1960s toucan figurine made in Tonalá, Jalisco Mexico, a province renowned for its earth-tone clay and for all the pottery and ceramic art created since the 1950s. Perched on its two front legs and resting on its tail, the toucan proudly shows his physique and profile. Signed "P Mateos" on the bottom.
The figurine is larger than most Tonalá ceramics and measures approximately 11.5" Beak to tail, 9.5" tall, 5.5" deep and is created with a deep beige putty undercoat and its back is embellished with the native flower of the region painted in cinnamon, terracotta, with gray leaves, and flourishes on its feathers in white, black, and gray.
