Lilian May Miller was the daughter of an American diplomat in Japan at the turn on the 20th century. She spent most of her life in Asia, and at a young age had become a promising artist. She was guided early into traditional Japanese art, techniques and culture. The well known etcher and engraver, Helen Hyde, became a strong influence in her life. After the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, she destroyed much of her wood print work, feeling betrayed by the Japanese. This framed, popular color woodblock titled “Rain Blossoms” is signed in the lower right.
