An explorer of Surrealism, Geometrism, Informalism, and Abstraction, Victor Chab (Argentinian, b. 1930) began his career as a painter at the age of 13, carrying almost a century of artistic activity on his shoulders. His training took place mainly in the free workshops of the Mutual de Estudiantes y Egresados de Buenos Aires (MEEBA), although Chab considers himself rather self-taught. The characters that haunt his paintings, generally built from fragments, are sensual and gloomy, resulting from automatism as a creative method. Regarding this way of working, he comments: "My painting is automatic, I work without a preconceived idea. The work creates itself as I elaborate it. I am attracted by this freedom to create my own forms." In an almost opposite way, Chab also projects his surrealist figures from the construction of geometric spaces that contain them, strongly inspired by the painting of Picasso, who he openly admires.
