These two nicely presented inside painted snuff bottles have the flattened round shape and a small raised oval foot. Patches of collars are placed on the sides and they are abbreviated version of the mythical animal masks with rings. Color overlays outlined the sides, top openings and feet Both have glass stoppers, the orange with swirls for the larger orange bottle, and light green with swirls for the smaller blue one. The smaller blue bottle is decorated with landscape paintings. On one side is a pavilion set against large rocks on a river with boats. The other side is two old pine trees on a river with distant mountains. The Orange bottle is also decorated with a landscape painting of an open pavilion near a river with distant mountains in the background. All three landscapes are after traditional Chinese landscape painting first established in the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368,) and continued with the Wu School in the Ming Dynasty(1368-1644.) This style of landscape painting was pretty much established by the Qing Dynasty (1644-1912) and still carry on by artists today. Both bottles are about the same vintage. The smaller blue bottle has an inscription with of cyclical date bing wu - 1966, the first year of the Chinese Cultural Revolution. That means these bottles were made before the Mao Zedong sent the Red Guards off and disrupted the society for the next 10 years.
Dimensions given are for the larger Orange Bottle.
