Lohans or Arhats are sentient beings who have achieved enlightenment but preferred to stay on earth to teach others to achieve Buddhahood. There are many lohans, all with non Chinese features, such as bushy hair and beards. This flattened elongated snuff bottle only showed six lohans in a landscape setting. The painting quality is well defined and the colors are attractive. The three characters on the other side reads from left to right - Lo Han Tu, or Painting of Lohans. There is a red shop mark inside the foot. It is matched with an agate stopper on a black collar. See less
