For Sale is a Wonderful Pair of Frederick Polydore Nodder ( b.1753 d.1800 Britain) ( fl.1771 - 1800 British Engraver) Natualist Illustrations & Hand Colored Engravings of a Black Swan and a Black-Bellied Darter. Both of these Birds / Water Fowl are Native to Australia.
A Very Rare Pair of Nodder's Self Published Engravings from the Late 18th Century, Neoclassical.
The Black Swan is extremely Rare and valuable especially in it's great condition. It has sold for $1800+.
Plate No. 108 The Black Swan measures 6 3/8 inches high x 4 1/4 inches wide, plate mark size.
Handmade Wove Paper Image size is 6 7/8 inches high x 4 3/4 inches wide.
Under the Black Swan is the script London, Published July 1st, 1792 by F. P. Nodder & Co. No. 15 Brewer Street.
Under this information you can see the Watermark of J. Whatman 1792 *2. I have a photo of the Watermark of J. Whatman but I wasn't able to unload it.
Plate No. 373 The Black-Bellied Darter measures 4 7/8 inches high x 6 9/10 inches wide, plate mark size.
Handmade Laid Paper Image size is 5 1/8 inches high x 7 3/4 inches wide.
Under The Black-Bellied Darter is Pub.d by F.P. Nodder March 1799. It is titled along the right side "Black-bellied Dart". in the left corner is intials RN, which could be his son Richard Nodder.
I couldn't find the Watermark but it must be there. *1 On April 5, 1794 it became England law that a Watermark is present. With laid paper it is possibly on the back.
Silver Leaf Liners around each paper size. Then Black Mats around each Birds.
Silver Leaf Frames are slightly different in size.
The Black Swan Frame is 12 7/8 inches high x 10 7/8 inches wide.
The Black Bellied Darter Frame is 11 1/8 inches high x 13 5/8 inches wide.
The back of each has a label for The Framing Gallery of Grosse Pointe. They were last framed in Nov. 5, 1981.
Worthy of a Museum or Collector.
