Description of the item:
Sculpture, polychrome hard-paste porcelain figurine, entirely decorated by hand, with pure gold finishes, depicting a courtier in 18th-century clothing and a tricorn hat, signed under the base in blue underglaze: "R," the mark of the German manufacturer Rauenstein. The sculpture can be dated to the late 18th century, between 1783 and 1830.
Final considerations on the item:
The figurine was made in a beautiful Rococo style, very similar to the sculptures of Anton Bustelli of Nymphenburg. Wonderful patina, especially under the base. Of particular note is the beauty of the head, delicately reclined to one side in the classic Rococo style, the bodice, entirely decorated with the artist's brush, and the slightly stubby legs, typical of all 18th-century figurines. Bear in mind that Rauenstein figurines are extremely rare. In fact, we have not been able to find any for sale online or at auction in recent years, not a single 18th-century Rococo piece like ours, only much more recent items that are in no way comparable to the beauty of our little sculpture.
Information about the artist and/or manufacturer:
Rauenstein is a German manufacturer founded in Germany in 1783 by the three Greiner brothers with the concession of Duke George of Saxe-Meiningen, who made the Rauenstein castle available to them for the production of high-quality artistic porcelain with the aim of competing with the Meissen manufacturer, internationally renowned for the quality and beauty of its porcelain, developing the decorations on tableware that made it famous. Just below this description, we have included a photo with historical information about the manufacturer and some of the marks used, including the one below this sculpture. Ours is number 2, one of the first and oldest, used, as written in the notes below the marks, from 1783, as per the date on the object.
