This refined and elegant set consists of four brass wall sconces with crystal bobeches. Each sconce features a central body from which two arms extend and gracefully cross in a sinuous design, ending in crystal bobeches and lamp holders. The hollow lower hemisphere houses the electrical wires that connect to the light points at the ends of the arms. Additionally, a metal plate inside the hemisphere allows the sconces to be securely mounted to the wall. These appliques were crafted between 1960 and 1964 in an artisan workshop in Milan. The design reflects the style of Emilio Lancia, developed in collaboration with Giò Ponti. It is likely that the two architects provided their designs directly to the workshop, as there is no evidence of either Gancia or Ponti owning their own factories or workshops for mass production. However, they probably had ateliers or small spaces for the development of prototypes and samples, which were later entrusted to external artisan workshops for production. For more complex projects, they collaborated with larger specialized companies such as Artemide, FontanaArte, Venini, and others. This practice was common for both Ponti and Gancia, who relied on skilled manufacturers to ensure high-quality production and fidelity to their designs. The lighting pieces designed by Ponti and Gancia are distinguished by their use of premium materials and advanced techniques, often entrusted to highly specialized workshops. Ponti's designs frequently required sophisticated craftsmanship, which led Gancia to partner with producers capable of meeting such high standards. Giovanni “Giò” Ponti (Milan, 1891-1979) was one of the most influential Italian architects and designers of the 20th century. Renowned for his innovative approach, Ponti seamlessly blended functionality and aesthetics. His work spanned various styles, from modern Neoclassicism to Rationalism, ultimately arriving at a personal synthesis characterized by elegance and lightness. Emilio Lancia (Milan, 1890-1973) was an architect and designer best known for his contributions to residential architecture and interior design. Famous for his collaboration with Ponti, Lancia favored an elegant decorative style marked by clean lines and sophisticated details, striking a balance between modern Neoclassicism and Art Deco. His projects, often in partnership with Ponti, combined Italian craftsmanship with an innovative spirit. Both operated within the context of the Novecento Style, an artistic and architectural movement that reinterpreted classical Italian aesthetics with a modern sensibility. Our four appliques perfectly embody this collaboration. Their impeccable craftsmanship showcases meticulous attention to detail and extraordinary artisanal skill. The contrast between the warmth of polished brass and the ethereal transparency of crystal highlights the sophistication of the design. The sinuous and symmetrical lines intertwine in a harmonious motif, evoking the elegance of Art Deco and Rationalist forms. These appliques are not merely lighting elements but genuine decorative art pieces that bring character and sophistication to any environment. They are ideal for vintage design enthusiasts and collectors seeking exclusive items. The appliques are in good condition. The electrical system is functional, but the wiring is European; we recommend consulting an electrician to verify voltage compatibility before use. They can be paired with light bulbs of your preferred shape.
