This wood block hand-painted print, titled Zarastrustra, is by Miriam Sommerburg, a well known German artist who worked in many media throughout the 1930's. She fled to the US during WWII on the one vessel whose passengers were allowed to enter the US. They were all interned at the Fort Ontario Emergency Refugee shelter in northern NYS. While there Sommerburg taught art and was given support and supplies by local residents. She remained in the US. Her work is in the Metropolitan Museum, the Holocaust Museum, as well as many museums in Europe.
In the US it is not easy to find Sommerburg’s work outside of museums. This hand-colored print, although small, is very powerful. It is an amazing evocation of anguish.
The print may, or may not, have been done during Sommerburg's internment at Fort Ontario. We bought it ia Cambridge, MA shop in 2014. It is in good condition. We have not opened the frame.
Dimensions: The engraving is 3” x 3”; the piece is 6.5” x 8.5” with its frame.
