Her mother is Frances Salazar, and she is the granddaughter of renowned Santa Clara potter Flora Naranjo. She was taught the art of making pottery at the age of 6, and has carried on the family tradition ever since. This Vintage Santa Clara Pottery by Sophie Cata displays traditional methods and a talented hand! Hand coiled and shaped, it was deeply carved (incised) with traditional, geometric designs and then stone rubbed. It was fired outside with dung, to reveal the high shine finish that these pots are known for. This highly collectible, museum quality jar is a real beauty! It's 3 1/2"tall and 4" at the wide and it's signed. In very good, used condition, circa 1990's. An exceptional piece by any standard, this Vintage Santa Clara Pottery is one of a kind!

Sophie (1957- ) was born in the Santa Clara Pueblo. She started working with clay when she was 6. She learned from her grandmother, Flora Naranjo and her mother Frances Salazar. She is referenced in Schaaf's "Pueblo Indian Pottery: 750 Artist Biographies" and Schiffer's "Pueblo and Navajo Contemporary Pottery".

Sophie gathers the clay and sand at the Santa Clara Pueblo, and does the firing outside in the traditional manner. For black pottery, horse dung is added to the fire to achieve a black finish. See less
