Equine fine art photographer Lisa Cueman is known for an intimate and reductive approach to photography that imparts her images with the power to deeply contemplate the essential beauty and spirit of the horse.
Lisa grew up on the island of Bermuda with the great fortune of being a 14th generation of her family tree, most of whom had called Bermuda home. Her upbringing could clearly be described as a charmed existence of exceptional childhood freedoms on the island and in the waters most of which was on horseback. The experiences she was gifted has instilled a freedom of spirit and connectedness to the environment that informs her work today.
Lisa’s foray into photography began in high school and was later honed through summer jobs, successive internships, mentoring opportunities and intensive workshops over the years. A directive to “photograph what you love” began Lisa’s pursuit of horse photography. Inspired by the moving imagery of Tony Stromberg’s photography and Roberto Dutesco’s Sable Island’s wild horse photography, Lisa began pilgrimages to the Outer Banks of North Carolina and elsewhere which melded her deep love of the sea, horses and photography and continues on to this day. Her award-winning work has been exhibited in group exhibitions, solo shows, and prestigious equine events and is represented by several fine art galleries in the US.
Lisa moved to the US in 1996 and lives in Vermont with her husband and Rhodesian Ridgebacks.
Additionally, Lisa returns to the Outer Banks of North Carolina every year, photographing the herds and personalities that she has become so familiar with over time. If there was ever an environment that combined all the elements that Lisa is passionate about, it would be in this tiny segment of protected barrier islands where the dynamics of the herds are in as much flux as the barrier islands, constantly changing with the ebb and flow of the sands and sea. This BBC produced video featuring Lisa at work beautifully captures the magnificence of the environment that these wild horses have called home for centuries.
