Knowles Utility Wear, U. S. A. Made of semi-vitreous ceramic, featuring gold lettering and red accents, it is one to behold for the collector or barware aficionado.
Originally designed to serve the warm cocktail relative to eggnog called "Tom and Jerry", the exact emergence of the Tom and Jerry sets' first record is debatable. Reliable documentation exists, however, pointing origins back to at least the early 1800's.
The drink's name is a reference to Egan's book, Life in London, or The Day and Night Scenes of Jerry Hawthorn Esq. and his Elegant Friend Corinthian Tom (c1821), and the subsequent stage play Tom and Jerry, or Life in London (also c1821).
The Edwin M Knowles Company produced wares in the United States from 1900 to 1962.
