They primarily used European blanks from France or Germany, but with the advent of World War I the supply of porcelain from those countries dried up. Instead, Americans began importing undecorated white Satsuma from Japan and the decorated pieces of Japanese pottery became colloquially known thereafter as American Satsuma.
