This Chinese porcelain plaque, twentieth century and probably Jingdezhen, is painted in the famille rose palette with an exotic long-tailed bird on a flowering and fruiting peach branch — teal scaled crest, russet breast, green wings, and a long pink ribbon tail ending in a yellow tip. Flat plaques of this type, called ciban, were made to be framed and hung as paintings, and this one keeps its black-lacquered frame with a gilt key-fret border. In Chinese art the peach is the fruit of longevity, and a bird among its blossoms is a conventional wish for long life and good fortune.

It is the companion to a second plaque of the same subject in our inventory, the two compositions facing one another — they hang singly, flank a mirror or doorway as a pair, or anchor a wall of botanical and bird pictures. The reverse carries an old label of a Richmond, Virginia framing studio.
