A very detailed and exceptionally large and finely worked early 19th century embroidery panel with magnificent trees stitched in varying textures of chenille and glossy silk. The scene shows children playing at being soldiers by a brook, with a Roman aqueduct visible in the far distance. Probably French. Needlework in very good antique condition, oxidation, separations and some pinholes to the painted silk ground of the sky: underwent professional conservation 2013 to address and stabilize the fragile silk, backing added. Distress and separations to the silk remain. Reverse black painted and gilded glass sets the panel off handsomely against its antique gilded frame.
