Item description:
Pair of large salt cellars in vitrified hard-paste porcelain, polychrome, entirely hand-decorated, consisting of a lady and a gentleman in 18th-century clothing reclining with a salt and pepper basket decorated with flowers in bas-relief, signed under the base with two crossed swords in blue underglaze, the mark of the German manufacturer Meissen. The pair of sculptures can be dated to the late 1700s or early 1800s. The artistic quality is high; note the beauty of the meticulous decorations, all executed with a brush tip, and the delicacy of the numerous small flowers applied in relief, a classic feature of the oldest and most beautiful Meissen porcelain. The porcelain is very hard and compact, full and solid, and the pair is very heavy.
Useful information for evaluating the item:
This pair is one of Meissen's most famous creations and has been published in numerous texts. It has been copied and reproduced by many other manufacturers. There are many examples for sale, varying in beauty and age, some genuinely made by Meissen and others copied by other manufacturers. Focusing only on the most beautiful and truly antique ones like ours, the prices we found range from minimum auction bases of €1,000-1,200 as starting prices to results or requests of over €2,500-3,000, obviously for the original and antique ones from the late 1700s and early 1800s.
Information about the artist and/or manufacturer:
Meissen is the oldest and most important German porcelain manufacturer in the world and has the distinction of being the first European manufacturer to discover the formula for porcelain in around 1710, thanks to the chemist and alchemist Johann Friedrich Bottger, who was imprisoned by King Frederick William in Meissen Castle with the task of finding the formula for creating gold, but instead accidentally discovered the formula for hard porcelain.
