Late 19th century engraving of Don Carlos after portrait by Léon Bonnat. Engraving by Lionel Lecouteux. Produced for the Exposition Universelle De 1878. Hand rendered French matting, enclosed in a beveled silver gilt frame.
Don Carlos, Duque de Madrid, three-quarter length, standing, directed to the right with face turned and looking to the left, bearded, wearing double breasted uniform jacket, chain of the Order of the Golden Fleece, and coat hanging from his left shoulder; hands together, holding a cigarette in his right hand; illustration to 'L'Art'. 1878
He was a Carlist leader in the Second Carlist War (1872-76) and nephew of Don Carlos, conde de Montemolín; took part in two failed insurrections against the Spanish government in 1869 and 1872 after the deposition of Queen Isabella II (q.v.), Charles IV granddaughter and Ferdinand VII's daughter, in 1868; in 1873, the Carlists were successful in seizing most of the Basque provinces and parts of Catalonia, Aragón, and Valencia; defected to France after the appointment of Alfonso XII, son of Isabella, to the throne.
Léon Joseph Florentin Bonnat (1833 - 1922) was a French painter, Grand Officer of the Légion d'honneur and professor at the Ecole des Beaux Arts.
