Traditionally used as cornices or so-called "French return slats", these valances were attached to the wall above the windows. Curtains or special fabric were then attached to the valance, covering several inches in front of the glass. In the mid-18th century, window coverings were a luxury reserved for the nobility and upper classes. However, as the 19th century progressed and the middle class grew in size and influence, window decorations became increasingly popular. A testament to the era, these two pairs of finely carved oak valances have retained their functionality and can still be used as intended. Everything was cleaned several times and preserved with hard ecological oil.
