Lovely image of a procession outside the San Francisco de Asis Mission Church in Taos, New Mexico.
DESCRIPTION
Artist: Gustave Baumann (German, American 1881-1971)
Medium: Multicolor woodblock print
Substrate: cream colored matte paper
Signature: "Gustave (hand-in-heart chop mark) Baumann" in pencil, lower right margin
Title: "Church Ranchos de Taos" in pencil, lower left margin
Edition: Numbered "NO 99 OF 100" (or 94 of 100?) in pencil, lower center above dotted outline, Second edition circa 1924
Baumann printed three editions of this piece in 1911, circa 1924, and in 1942, according his catalogue raisonné edited by Gala Chamberlain, "In a Modern Rendering: The Color Woodcuts of Gustave Baumann."
Baumann changed the design in multiple ways with each edition, so identification of the the printing date and edition are straight-forward. Among other changes, the second edition can be identified by the combination of:
1. Title written in all capital letters (Edition 1 had cursive letters.)
2. Dotted border is a dark orange color (Edition 1 had a yellow dotted border.)
2. Dark border around the printed area (Edition 3 had no such border)
FRAMING
Wood frame in medium brown with black painted outer sides.
Generous matting
Print is protected under glass.
