The art of Japanese flower arrangement is known as Ikebana, a tradition that dates back to the 7th century. The image was illustrated by Tatsushi Higuchi; his signature red ink stamp is in lower right. The floral plate is accompanied by a tissue paper insert which offers commentary both in Japanese and English on how to arrange the floral designs. The arrangement broke with tradition of Japanese design. Previously, flower arrangements were carried out in strict conformity with classic rules of structure. Following WWII, floral arrangements allowed for boundless creative self-expression.
The print has a textural quality. It showcases 2 distinct designs. The left arrangement features dahlias in a glazed container. The designer selected the dahlia for its crooked natural growth. The showy flowers are placed carefully. Note the bend in the stem; this allows for a curve to showcase the blossom against the vase. The arrangement on the right features the iris arranged in its natural grasses with grape seed pods which add volume and balance. The two calla lilies compliment the irises and the arrangement becomes harmonious.
