A vintage Italian-made Majolica cabbage ware platter of creamy white glazed ceramic punctuated with colorful over-glaze painted details. Dated to mid-century, most likely during the 1960’s to the early 1970’s, it is reminiscent of renowned nature-themed Majolica tableware produced by Bordallo Pinheiro of Portugal.
Featuring four (4) white wells intended to separate different food items with each well resembling a cabbage leaf turned up around the perimeter to hold its contents in place. Rising in the platter's center is an oval-shaped attached bowl with an intricate hand-painted design of ombré green and yellow. The bowl can hold a sauce, dip or condiment, or even nuts. There is a notch on one side of the bowl against which a small serving spoon could rest. (NOTE that no spoon is included).
This platter makes a fine choice for serving a variety of assorted foods such as crudites, olives, chips, crackers, cheeses, nuts, and grapes, or berries for breakfast or dessert. It could also be used as a ‘vide poche’ in the kitchen, or even in a home entry, on a dresser or large bathroom counter. Its classic and timeless cabbage motif adds a natural accent with a touch of whimsy to a dining or other environment and blends well with a wide range of interior styles and settings.
