This piece, titled "Upstream Voyage, #2" and worked on from 1989-94 expresses a confluence of emotion and movement (struggle)- two recurring themes in his work. Blood red, copper, burnt orange, an icy teal, shades of gray, black and white that have been worked and reworked give this piece an extraordinary depth. While the effect is cool tones it is very easy to live with. The monoprint works well with primitive and Inuit art which is how we've displlayed it. The print is approximately 24" x 20" and mounted against a slightly larger board. The work is unframed and shrink wrapped.
This abstract expressionist monoprint is by listed artist John Avakian (Living). Avakian holds a BFA from the School of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts and an MFA from Yale University and teaches at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and Northeastern University. His work is in the permanent collections for the Fogg Museum at Harvard University, the New York Public Library and the Boston Public Library and many private collections. He perhaps best known for his exhibit "Lest We Forget" at the Hunter-Cavanagh Gallery, Providence College, a work documenting the physical and emotional toll of the Armenian Genocide.
