It was invented and designed by the Nobel Prize Winner, Peter J.W. Debye, 1884-1966. Debye was a chemist who worked with Albert Einstein and used this personal piece in his scientific work. Debye was a member of the Solvay Conference in 1927. The Debye unit, used to express electric dipole moments of molecules, was named after him. A brass plaque on the inside of the instrument reads, "Peter J.W. Debye, 1884 -1966".

This scientific antique is a tool known as an Ellipsometer, which shows dielectric/molecular properties of thin film. It is quite large, weighing almost 50 pounds and measuring 72 inches in length.

This spectrometer was purchased at the estate sale of William Smith, former President of Slippery Rock University in Pennsylvania. President Smith went to Cornell University in the early 1960's to pursue a doctorate in Chemistry, where he studied under Peter J.W. Debye. When Professor Debye passed away, William Smlth acquired this magnificent tool.
