Late 19th/early 20th Century Wedding Chest hand painted with lots of auspicious symbols and calligraphy. The old decoration has hints of copper / gold lacquer that highlight the hand painted objects that include fans, ribbons, gourds, peaches and leaves. Made from slatted and bent wood and bamboo.
Nowadays these 'boxes' can be used for a variety of purposes such as storage and decoration. Originally these were used in China to carry food and sweets for celebrations in days gone by. This particular chest has a total of 2 tiers and a lid, a sturdy handle with an old cast metal handle on the top held in place by split pins.
The basket is in it's original condition, has oozes wonderful aged patination - clean inside.
