Crafted in … Read more Decorate a mantel, console, or dining table with this elegant pair of antique-style faience candlesticks from Rouen, Normandy. Crafted in France circa 1960, each ceramic candleholder stands on a shaped square base raised on scrolling feet embellished with stylized acanthus leaf motifs and scalloped contours inspired by traditional Rouen faience designs. The tall tapered stems rise to flared candle cups decorated with delicate hand-painted borders in rich cobalt blue, yellow, green, and burnt orange tones.
Each candlestick is beautifully hand painted throughout with intricate floral sprays, foliage, and whimsical butterfly motifs in the classic Rouen manner. The vibrant palette contrasts beautifully against the crisp white glazed ground, while the sculptural bases and colorful ornamentation give the pair wonderful movement and decorative presence. The faience candlesticks are in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, and retain vivid coloration and a lustrous glazed finish throughout.
