This delightful and unique Italian walnut coffee table stands out for its first distinguishing feature: its height. It is low, making it ideal for placement next to or in front of a sofa, or in the center of a living room, without obstructing pathways. The coffee table showcases meticulous attention to detail: the frame is compact and sturdy, made from dark, polished walnut, with a rectangular top featuring clean lines and rounded corners. The base consists of two slanted side panels that widen toward the bottom, forming an upside-down “V,” connected by a horizontal bar, which enhances its stability. Another notable feature is the folding and swiveling top (see photos and video); this allows the table to be used in various configurations, either expanding the surface area when needed or facilitating storage in smaller spaces. At 62 cm in height, it is perfectly suited as a coffee table, ideal for holding drinks, books, or small decorative items.
This coffee table was crafted between 1950 and 1955 in Lombardy, specifically in a workshop in Cantù, a town in the province of Como renowned for its fine handcrafted furniture. In this region, numerous luxury and designer furniture makers have long created—and continue to create—custom, one-of-a-kind pieces, using premium materials and high-level craftsmanship. The table's design reflects the principles of Art Deco, an artistic movement that greatly influenced interior design between the 1920s and 1940s. It is characterized by geometric shapes, streamlined lines, and luxurious materials. The dark walnut and glossy finish give the piece a sophisticated and elegant appearance. This coffee table is a charming piece, combining smart functionality with a subtle yet refined aesthetic. Its practical and versatile design made it perfect for mid-century living spaces, and today it could serve as a valuable collector's item. The item has been restored and is in excellent condition.
