Set of two original 1835 celestial engravings by month by Elijah Hinsdale Burritt, from his Atlas, Designed to Illustrate the Geography of the Heavens. These northern and southern hemisphere charts depict the night sky and constellations in remarkable detail, including zodiacal figures and recognizable constellations such as Ursa Major, Ursa Minor, Draco, Cassiopeia, Perseus, Hydra, Dorado, and Pavo. Each features vibrant original hand-coloring, particularly desirable among Burritt’s celestial charts.
Custom framed, mat and UV-resistant glass. Dimensions: 20 1/4" x 21”
Elijah Hinsdale Burritt was a teacher, newspaper editor, and surveyor from Connecticut. He aimed to create a guide that would help students and amateur astronomers locate stars. Eventually, he published the first edition of a star atlas and an accompanying textbook called "Geography of the Heavens." The atlas and books became extremely popular with both schools and the general public, remaining so for the next 40 years.
