This fine, six-sided brass candlestick has been engraved and inlaid with silver and copper strips in broad bands of Kufic … Read more This fine, six-sided brass candlestick has been engraved and inlaid with silver and copper strips in broad bands of Kufic script, no doubt incorporating Koranic versus and invoking the various names of God, as well as bands of Islamic-inspired arabesques. Safavid Persian figural (the sultan and his family) decoration, foliage, animals and birds. Some arabic numbers are visible on front: 17 being one of them.
Hand engraved and inlaid with silver and copper. Background is filled in with black composition.
The form of this candlestick is square and is designed to sit on the floor. Fine examples of inlaid metalwork were made during the three Islamic empires of the early modern period – the Mughal, the Safavid, and the Mamluk and when the crafts was revived in Syria and Egypt during the nineteenth century the works were known as Mamluk Revival metalwork.
The candlestick has a fine patina from use.
Acquired from an antique dealer in the Middle East by one of our ancestors who served with the 3rd Battalion, Royal Regiment of Scotland, in World War I.
Dimensions: 3 in W x 3 in D x 10 in H (7.5 cm x 7.5 cm x 25.5 cm).
Condition: Very good for age. Signs of traditional usage and age. The candlestick has a fine patina from use.
Couple of minor scratches. Item has not been cleaned or repaired. Item is sold in the same condition as found/inherited.
