This graphite and pigment work of art of Steeplechase Park, Coney Island, Brooklyn, New York circa 1897 is from the noted collector Frederick Fried (1908-1994) via the Frederick Fried Coney Island Collection (1847-2001.) George C. Tilyou, inspired by the architecture and amusements of the White City of the Columbian Exposition of 1893 in Chicago, opened Steeplechase Park, named after Coney Island’s horse racing tradition, in 1897. The opening of this park heralded the beginning of Coney Island’s era as the Nation’s playground and the rise of the modern amusement park.
