This extremely old, antique tobacco jar is a handsome example of English ironstone crockery. The earthenware body is covered in a tobacco brown glossy glaze with a dark umber top rim and lid. The unique knob is copper with verdigris patina. The interior has a gloss taupe hued glaze finish. The lid fits snuggly with a 3-part system to preserve the humidity within the vessel, thus keeping the tobacco aromatic and fresh.
The maker's mark on the underside: Rogers, Made in England suggests that it is a creation of the pottery firm established c. 1784 by the brothers John Rogers (1760–1816) and George Rogers (1762–1815) in Dale Hall, Longport, Burslem, Staffordshire. Upon George Rogers death in 1815, the name was changed to John Rogers & Son, thus dating this piece to the period 1784 - 1815, making it as much as 240 years old!
