Fabulous introduction to the work of this outrageously talented English pen and ink artist. Aubrey Beardsley
died at 28, but produced a stunning array of drawings for a number of publications of that era.
He was a true original, humorous, highly skilled, imaginative; his drawings are impossible to ignore, filled with movement, detail and a mordant humor. He (along with Oscar Wilde) were something of a scandal to Victorian England. (How about that Ali Baba???)
Walker has collected 134 drawings and provided a rich portrayal of Beardsley's impetus and short career, his work and connections. Ribald yet dark, delicate and imaginative, he was considered the best of his field, even now.
Each drawing includes the source of its publication.
A wild encounter, each time you open it. Liine drawings seem simple: this is astonishing.
The book itself, without the dust jacket, is gorgeous, cream imprinted with one of Beardsley's designs printed in blue on a pale yellow background.
The photo prior to the photo of Beardsly is, astonishingly, a bookcover: nothing but that design.
