This beauty was handwoven in one of the villages outside the Municipality of Bangued, capital of the province of Abra in the Philippines. The basket’s Japanese-influenced design and motif has to do with Japanese basket weaving volunteers coming to the region in the 1970s. Over a 15-year period, local traditional art form was transformed through the Japanese volunteers sharing their weaving techniques in this cross-cultural exchange. Handcrafted from rattan and nito vine wefts, using an over and under weave over rattan warps. The whimsical geometric pattern on the lid and upper portion of the urn creates visually striking and textural interest, as well! The lid is attached with a handwoven triple nito vine ring “chain” which can be removed by cutting it off to make the lid a separate unit. It rests atop a circular pedestal ring which gives it a nice boost of height. This lovely measures 10” high from ring handle tip-to-bottom; 8” high with the lid off to the side; 9½” x 9½” W/D (taken from the widest part of the urn’s exterior); interior 7” x 9” x 9” H/W/D (width/depth measured from the widest interior center point); weight 6 oz. In excellent condition with negligible wear. Whimsically charming yet utilitarian, it’s a great catchall basket or fabulous décor accent that will complement any style.
