French Longwy Majolica Armorial Charger Dijon Coat of Arms Colorful Hanging Plate Limited Edition Burgundy Keepsake Gift French Majolica
This outstanding Longwy majolica charger features the Dijon coat of arms set against a craquelure background, framed by a vibrant and colorful border. A stunning piece for wall decor, it is perfect for collectors of French majolica or anyone who appreciates Dijon's rich cultural heritage. It also serves as a wonderful memento of a trip to the Burgundy region.
Dijon is renowned as the gastronomic capital of Burgundy and a gateway for wine enthusiasts exploring the Burgundy wine route. The olive and oak branches surrounding the red shield symbolize peace, strength, and victory, reflecting the city's agricultural abundance and long-standing cultural prominence.
The plate is clearly marked on the underside with a printed Longwy mark used from 1957 to 1989. One of only 100 pieces produced in this design, this particular plate is number 47. The inscription reads as follows:
Piece a tirage limite
a 100 exemplaires
N°47
"Pierre Cretin-Dijon"
Emaux de Longwy - France
Atelier D'Art
Made in France
Rehausse: AK
47
Initials AK correspond to those of Albert KIRCHTETTER (1910-1976) who worked at Longwy from 1929 until his death in 1976. He was an "enhancer" responsible for highlighting the design with a second layer of enamel to add dimension and volume to the piece.
The faiencerie de Longwy was founded in a former Carmelite convent purchased in 1798 by Pierre-Joseph Boch, Charles Regnier and Nicolas Soldez. Longwy's patterns were inspired by free form oriental designs. Each color is outlined in black resembling the effect of wire in cloisonne. One of Longwy's first clients was Napoleon I, who ordered a large dinnerware set of which a tureen still survives and is on display at the Longwy Municipal Museum. Zoom into photos to appreciate in detail, in very good condition as shown. Shipped fully insured with tracking number.
