A 1920s orange art pottery vase from Pilkington's Royal Lancastrian Pottery Company of England, created during the Art Deco period … Read more A 1920s orange art pottery vase from Pilkington's Royal Lancastrian Pottery Company of England, created during the Art Deco period between 1924 and 1929. The vase features a dynamic glaze of a glossy burnt orange ground with mottled yellow accents topped by a drip glaze of speckled bronze brown. Very good condition with a couple of tiny nicks on the foot rim (invisible when the vase is upright), measuring 6 in. height x 5 in. diameter (at widest). Full impressed marks on the base include a 2922 model number over the company's first period potting mark/logo, ROYAL / LANCASTRIAN / ENGLAND.

Pilkington's Tile and Pottery Company was founded in 1891 at Clifton Junction in Manchester. The company employed artists and chemists including John Chambers and William Burton, but also commissioned work from well-known designers of the era including C.F.A. Voysey, Walter Crane, Gordon Forsyth, and Lewis Day. Pilkington's used technical expertise and innovation to develop a range of striking artistic glazes, exhibiting the results at international exhibitions including Paris 1900, Milan 1904, Brussels 1910, and Turin 1911. King George V awarded the company a Royal Warrant in 1913 resulting in a name change to Pilkington’s Royal Lancastrian Pottery Company.
