Thomas Handforth was born in Tacoma, Washington on September 16, 1897. Handforth studied at the University of Washington and at L'Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris. He wrote, illustrated, and was awarded the Caldecott Medal in 1939 for his book, Mei Li about his experiences in China. He died in Los Angeles on October 19, 1948.
"Dance of the Tecuanes" etching on paper, pencil signed numbered from an edition of 75. Dance of the Jaguars (tecuanes) is a Mexican folk dance.
A copy of this etching is included in the collections of the Minneapolis Institute of Art, North Carolina Museum of Art, Portland Art Museum (OR), and the Clark Institute in Williamstown, MA
