In the second half of the 18th century the earliest known examples of architect's table were produced first in England and subsequentially in America shortly thereafter. The predominate style attributed to Thomas Chippendale became the prevalent form of a standard architect's table with examples produced in England generally ascribed as belonging to the George III period. This example is a masterful work produced by a furniture maker working in England around the third quarter of the 19th century. The entire piece is made to the same exacting standards as an early 18th century predecessor but does not come with the same $10,000 - $20,000 price tag which these early architect's tables have historically commanded. This architect's table, or architect's desk as they can be interchangeably referred to, is simply an incredible find offering all of the charm and function of the earliest known architect's tables while also being priced within reach of the average antique collector.

The exceptional form of this architect's table is defined by the serpentine form which spans the length of the front. The entire case is constructed from a beautiful grade of exotic mahogany with the top being largely comprised of a single old growth board of unusual width. The top is shaped and molded over the entire perimeter and projects over a single drawer. The drawer is fitted with two circular brass pulls and opens to reveal a felt lined writing surface which is designed to retract into the case so that the storage cavity of the drawer may be utilized. The table is supported by four Marlborough legs which are molded in great exaggeration and detail and is made portable with the original brass barrel form caster wheels. The table has a desirable old finish surface which displays signs of regular use and weathering as would befit an antique over a century and a half in age. This architect's table measures 34" wide x 21" deep x 30' tall. The drawer pulls out to make this desk 33 3/4" deep when fully extended and the drawer features 3" of usable storage height. See less
