This elegant pair of late 19th-century French Louis XV–style walnut armchairs brings a distinctly Parisian salon feel to any room. Crafted in solid walnut and richly hand-carved, they showcase classic Louis XV lines: gently shaped crests, scrolling arms, serpentine seat rails, and graceful cabriole legs ending in carved feet.
The frames are adorned with finely carved floral and foliate motifs on the crown, arms, seat, and legs, reflecting the opulent decorative language of the Louis XV period (c. 1715–1774). These chairs were made later, in the late 1800s, when French craftsmen revived this iconic Rococo style for the Belle Époque—combining 18th-century elegance with 19th-century comfort and quality.
Upholstery is both refined and charmingly unexpected. The front features a pale-yellow embossed damask pattern that catches the light beautifully, adding a soft, luminous warmth. The backs are finished in a contrasting cotton checkerboard, giving the pair a custom-decorator feel and making them striking from every angle—perfect for floating in a room.
If you’ve been looking for authentic French character, carved walnut quality, and a pair (not just a single occasional chair), these armchairs deliver both history and presence.

The walnut has been suitably stained. Typical nicks, scratches, and scrapes for 100-year-old chairs. There are old pinholes from woodworm. However, they have been professionally eradicated, and the chairs remain sturdy. The chairs were not constructed with screws or nails. Rather, you can see the wooden dowels. They are all hand-carved from that period. However, there are tack marks from the reupholstery. There are also visible splinters on the backs caused by an unfortunate upholstery job. The fabric is still in good condition. Due to the period, the chairs are low in height (16 in.). less
