Mr. Stimpson had an idea to keep refreshments cold while also being presented in style.
He patented it in 1854 and added it to his collection of mechanical patents.
There were good and bad elements to his plan. The pitcher had a unique form. It was big and impressive and showed a certain Yankee desire to overcome problems, such as tepid drinks.
At a time when serve ware was a form of status and also entertainment, it looked impressive.
It could sit on a sideboard of a business executive and offer cold water to visitors. It was not dainty or flowery. Could sit in male company and send a message of well being,
The bad element was that its double siding made the outer surface easy to dent. As time went on many if these pitchers showed a dent or two. This pitcher has three dents. Please note the interior has survived dent free and holds liquid. I checked it today.
I still feel this pitcher deserves to go on in someone's collection. Perhaps a reconstruction of a
Victorian office can find a place for it. I bought it because I was curious about inventive
Victorian serve ware,
The silver plate has a few missng spots, including under the spout.
