This Really is a Great Looking & Quite Rare Antique American Stoneware Butter Churn. The Front Bears the Impressed Maker Mark of the J.A. & C. W. UNDERWOOD FORT EDWARD NEW YORK Stoneware Company. My Research Indicates that This Company was Short Lived and Only in Production Between the Years of 1865 to 1867 Making it Easy to Accurately Establish When it was Actually Made. The Front is Artistically Hand Decorated in Blue with a Wonderful Bird on a Branch Design. It is Also Embossed with a Number 4 Designating its Large Four Gallon Storage Capacity. It has Classic American Salt Glazed Exterior with a Unusually Nice & Uniform Sand Color. Note that it has the Added Feature of Applied Handles - "Ears". The Interior is Done in a Dark Coffee Brown Color. Back in the Day These Types of Stoneware Items were a Necessity in Most of Americas Farms and Household's and They were Made - Intended For Everyday Utilitarian Use.
