Produced circa 1950 after a 19th-century composition, the hand-colored print is beautifully presented under glass in a decorative burlwood-style frame with gilt trim and a wide ivory mat accented with green and black borders.

The lively composition portrays John Shirley, huntsman to the historic Burton Hunt, riding a powerful brown horse across the English countryside, accompanied by a large pack of hounds in full pursuit. Additional mounted huntsmen dressed in traditional red hunting coats follow through a wooded landscape. The dramatic movement of the galloping horses and running hounds contrasts beautifully with the soft gray sky, autumn foliage, and rolling countryside.

The original composition bears an elaborate inscription identifying John Shirley and the Burton Hunt, together with a dedication to Sir Richard Sutton, Baronet. The lower margin also features a decorative coat of arms and credits to R. B. Davis, adding historical interest to the sporting subject.

Richard Barrett Davis was an accomplished British sporting and animal painter who exhibited at the Royal Academy beginning in 1802. He became animal painter to King George IV and subsequently worked under William IV and Queen Victoria. His paintings and prints depicting horses, hunting scenes, and country sporting life remain highly regarded examples of 19th-century British sporting art.

The vintage print is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, retaining its attractive colors and decorative framing. An excellent addition to a hunting lodge, ranch, library, gentleman's study, or traditional living room.
