Designed by George Nakashima in 1946 and produced by Knoll Associates, the N19 chair was intended as a mass-produced counterpoint to the Nakashima Studio’s popular “Straight Chair.” For the first several years of the N19 collaboration between George Nakashima and Knoll, Nakashima produced them before Knoll took over the production. This chair, unmarked, was produced by Knoll, most likely circa 1960. Chair authenticity is available upon request.
These early pieces for Knoll represent some of Nakashima's earliest work and are quite special due to these pieces pre-dating most of his studio designs. The Knoll relationship also pre-dates pieces he did for Widdicomb.
Echoing classic Shaker furniture and the spindle back of the Windsor chair, this N19 appears to be walnut with a smooth, curved band for a backrest supported by hand-chiseled (top) tapered dowels. The ergonomically sculpted seat sits on four angled legs.
Condition is very good, structurally sound. All legs and dowels are original, solid in place with no wiggling or movement. The chair does not wobble. Chair appears to have been amateurishly refinished at some point with uneven stain and drips. Feet missing glides though there does not appear to be any wear on the bottom of the legs. Presents beutifully.
