Moorcroft Fuchsia Pottery lion footed lamps Attributed to Walter Moorcroft Rare Pale Yellow Gold Background circa 1950s - A matching pair.
Measurements of the lamps from the base to above the light switch are 19 1/4” H x 6” W x 6” D at the base.
A pair of stunning lamps of tube-lined double blossom fuchsia flowers over a RARE pale yellow graduated background. The elaborate brass mounts include three acanthus leaf and lion feet over a circular stand. These Moorcroft lamps have a traditional ginger jar shaped form which has been decorated in the 'Fuchsia' pattern. The body of the lamps have a RARE variegated pale yellowish gold background featuring Moorcroft's distinctive slip-trailing technique. The leaves and blossoms have been finished in bright jewel tones. The body of the lamps have been joined to a metal base having a milgrain edge and three lions feet on a circle base. The patinated metal portion of the lamps have a brass finish. The ceramic portion of the lamps are 12" in height not including the base and the entire pieces stand 26 " as measured from the display surface to the top of the harp. The handcrafted table lamps display beautifully and have a saturated color palette which make an elegant statement. A visually appealing and useful pair.
These striking English art pottery lamps are attributed to the renowned Moorcroft Pottery company of Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire. Initially with James Macintyre & Co., innovative ceramist William Moorcroft founded his own firm in 1913. Underwritten by retailer Liberty London, the company went from strength to strength and was granted a Royal Warrant by Queen Mary in 1928, leading them to include the phrase ‘Potter To HM The Queen’ on their paper labels as well as in their impressed marks. William's son Walter joined the firm in 1935 and took over management and design responsibilities upon the death of his father in 1945. Walter Moorcroft was a British master potter. Born on February 12, 1917 in Burslem, United Kingdom, he took over his father, William Moorcroft’s, pottery business, Moorcroft Pottery, in 1945. Using his own Art-Nouveau designs as aids, he would hand paint ornate glazes on each vessel. These decorative elements, which consisted of richly colored flowers, became very popular during his lifetime. In 1972, at the height of his career, Moorcroft had a major exhibition at the Victoria and Albert Museum. He died on September 2, 2002, in London, United Kingdom.
Moorcroft remains in business today with early pieces by William and Walter being particularly sought after.
The lamps have been in my extended family’s homes since purchase.
