Handcrafted birdcage bamboo turned Windsor chairs by Love & Whitelock, circa 1790. Crafted using a mix of woods including oak and likely hickory, maple and/or poplar featuring classic pegged construction, a well-contoured seat, medallion back and splayed legs with a desirable, aged patina. Suitable both for dining and side chairs.
Benjamin Love was a master woodworking craftsman and designer based in the Philadelphia area specializing in Windsor chairs from 1781-1807. His chairs have been exhibited on tour at the Philadelphia Museum of Art's Historical House, Cedar Grove for over 80 years (currently closed for now). Love & Whitelock was a company formed by Benjamin and his apprentice stepson Isaac Whitelock. These chairs are a wonderful piece of American history and a fine example of early Pennsylvania furniture. They are in good, sturdy condition with age-appropriate patina and were built to stand the test of time. One of the pair is stamp signed "Love & Whitelock" on the underside.
