Chryssa Vardea Mavromichali
Greek Artist
(1933-2013)
She was a Greek American artist who worked in a wide variety of media. An American art pioneer in light art and luminist sculpture widely known for her neon, steel, aluminum and acrylic glass installations. She attended the Academic de la Grande Chaumiere, Paris, and moved to the U.S. in the 1950s where she studied at the California School of Fine Art. When Chryssa arrived in New York, she became enthralled with the shining lights and signs of Times Square. She has transformed these signs into her own mysterious symbols and images. The majority of her work is "Lumist" sculpture in brilliantly colored neon tubing. Chryssa's works have been exhibited in numerous galleries and museums, including the Guggenheim Museum, Museum of Modern Biennale, Venice; Biennale Sao Paulo and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
