"As we live in a world where the price of art makes it unattainable for most to acquire, my philosophy is art must be made accessible for all to own. For without art in our lives what is left?" - Harvey Edwards
Harvey Edwards was born in 1947 in New York City and was 5 when his family moved to Massapequa, Long Island New York. He obtained his first camera at age 12 and was instantly fascinated by his ability to stop time forever with the single snap of the shutter.
After high school he enlisted in the Air Force as a photographer, in the middle of the Vietnam War. During that time his father suddenly passed away and Harvey Edwards left the service on a hardship discharge. "In a strange way my father's death gave me life and a future", he comments. Returning home after majoring in Fine Art in college he continued his first love: expressing himself through photographic images.
He worked as an assistant with some of the greatest artists of this century, including Roy Lichtenstein and Jasper Johns. He continues to show his work through museums, galleries, one-man shows and articles. His work is held in major collections such as the Whitney, Museum of Modern Art, Los Angeles County Museum and Long Beach Museum of Art, to list a few, as well as by many private collectors. He has also produced several books, the latest of which is entitled The Art Of Dance and captures, through images of dancers, the sweat, strain and devotion needed for a life in the world of dance.
Harvey Edwards has been credited for creating the photographic fine art poster in the late 1970s with his classic image "LEG WARMERS", which has sold well over one million copies worldwide. He has also created images for some of the largest companies in the world, including Ford, Ernst and Young, Sony, Hallmark, the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Ballet and Harley Davidson to name just a few. His work has appeared in several hundred movies, music videos, commercials, television shows and print advertisements around the world.
