In certain parts of Asian, a monarch’s ownership of a white elephant was associated with a peaceful and just reign. Over time, in Asia, the white elephant came to be an auspicious symbol. (In the west, the white elephant came to mean something laden with misfortune due, it’s thought, to a poor decision on the part of the Barnum and Bailey Circus.) This porcelain elephant is a replica of an Edo Period (1603 - 1868) Kakiemon porcelain elephant that was in the later 19th century copied by the Parisian porcelain maker, Edmé Samson. The elephant is white with a blue and red blanket. This copy of the copy has a spurious Edmé Samson horn maker’s mark on the bottom of the left rear foot.
This early 20th century Japanese style porcelain elephant is in very good original condition with wear consistent with age and use.
