The large central portrait depicts an older fisherman wearing the characteristic traditional cap associated with the historic fishing communities of the Netherlands. His weathered face and pipe give the composition tremendous personality. Behind him is a quintessential Dutch maritime landscape with a fishing vessel, water and a windmill appearing along the distant horizon.

Rendered in richly layered shades of cobalt and Delft blue against a creamy white ground, the central scene has an almost engraved quality, with particularly effective shading throughout the fisherman's face, clothing and surrounding landscape.

The portrait is framed by an elaborate decorative border filled with stylized flowers, scrolling foliage and traditional Dutch blue-and-white ornament. Rather than leaving the rim undecorated, the floral border completely surrounds the figurative scene and gives the charger a strong graphic presence when displayed on a wall.

The decoration is inscribed “Volendam Holland” at the lower right.

The reverse bears a blue manufacturer's mark reading “Original Blauw Delfts,” “Handmade” and “Made in Holland,” together with a central crown or crest device and additional factory/production markings. Importantly, the mark does not identify Royal Copenhagen, and we therefore do not attribute this piece to Royal Copenhagen.

The charger measures 11.5 inches in diameter and has original holes on the reverse allowing it to be hung as decorative wall art. Its scale makes it substantial enough to display individually above a console, cabinet or small table, while also being an excellent addition to a collection of Delftware or a larger blue-and-white ceramic wall arrangement.

A particularly appealing piece for collectors of Dutch Delft ceramics, Delfts Blauw pottery, Volendam memorabilia, European folk art, maritime decorative objects and blue-and-white ceramics. Its strong cobalt palette also works beautifully in sophisticated contemporary interiors, where antique and vintage European objects are used as individual accents rather than as part of a themed room.

Condition: Good vintage condition with wear consistent with age and use. There is a small loss/chip at the upper back edge. Natural glaze crazing is visible and contributes to the vintage character of the piece. Please refer to the photographs for detailed condition.
